چکیده

The problem Hamiltonian of the adiabatic quantum algorithm for the maximum-weight independent set problem (MIS) that is based on the reduction to the Ising problem (as described in [6]) has flexible parameters. We show that by choosing the parameters appropriately in the problem Hamiltonian (without changing the problem to be solved) for MIS on CK graphs [7], we can prevent the first order quantum phase transition [4] and significantly change the minimum spectral gap. We raise the basic question about what the appropriate formulation of adiabatic running time should be. We also describe adiabatic quantum algorithms for Exact Cover and 3SAT in which the problem Hamiltonians are based on the reduction to MIS. We point out that the argument in Altshuler et al. [2] that their adiabatic quantum algorithm failed with high probability for randomly generated instances of Exact Cover does not carry over to this new algorithm.

Different adiabatic quantum optimization algorithms for the NP-complete exact cover problem.

One of the most important questions in studying quantum computation is: whether a quantum computer can solve NP-complete problems more efficiently than a classical computer? In 2000, Farhi, et al. (Science, 292(5516):472–476, 2001) proposed the adiabatic quantum optimization (AQO), a paradigm that directly attacks NP-hard optimization problems. How powerful is AQO? Early on, van Dam and Vaziran...

2 Maximum Coverage 2.1 Problem Definition

In the previous lecture we covered polynomial time reductions and approximation algorithms for vertex cover and set cover problems. By reductions we showed that SAT, 3SAT, Independent Set, Vertex Cover, Integer Programming, and Clique problems are NP-Hard. In this lecture we will continue to cover approximation algorithms for maximum coverage and metric TSP problems. We will also cover Strong N...

Faster Exact Solutions for Some NP-Hard Problems

This paper considers a number of NP-complete problems, and provides faster algorithms for solving them. The solutions are based on a recursive partitioning of the problem domain, and careful elimination of some of the branches along the search without actually checking them. The time complexity of the proposed algorithms is of the form O(2 ) for constant 0¡ ¡ 1, where n is the output size of th...

The complexity of approximating PSPACE-Complete problems for hierarchical specifications

We extend the concept of polynomial time approximation algorithms to apply to problems for hierarchically speciied graphs, many of which are PSPACE-complete. Assuming P 6 = PSPACE, the existence or nonexistence of such eecient approximation algorithms is characterized, for several standard graph theoretic and combinatorial problems. We present polynomial time approximation algorithms for severa...

Ultrafast adiabatic quantum algorithm for the NP-complete exact cover problem

An adiabatic quantum algorithm may lose quantumness such as quantum coherence entirely in its long runtime, and consequently the expected quantum speedup of the algorithm does not show up. Here we present a general ultrafast adiabatic quantum algorithm. We show that by applying a sequence of fast random or regular signals during evolution, the runtime can be reduced substantially, whereas advan...
